Google and other search engines started this in February of 2009. Here's why: Google considers duplicate content a bad practice and they penalize webpages with duplicate content by lowering their rank or not ranking them at all. When Google's AI identifies duplicate content it gets confused on which page to grant the authoritative signal and therefore the ranking it earned.
